Finding authentic Mexican food in Phnom Penh can be a challenge. Many places offer tacos and burritos, but they are often localized or adjusted to fit Cambodian tastes. However, Bay Area Tacos is an exception.

This place is run by an American, ensuring that the flavors remain true to authentic Mexican cuisine. Located in Toul Tom Poung, a popular area among Western travelers, this spot offers a unique dining experience with a truly international vibe.

"Ambiance & Interior"

The restaurant is small but well-designed, with a modern and cozy atmosphere. One of the standout features is the visual music projection on the walls, adding a trendy and immersive touch. The dim lighting makes it a great place to enjoy a casual meal or a drink.

As expected from the Toul Tom Poung area, the majority of the customers were Western travelers, which adds to the international feel of the place. Unlike other Mexican restaurants in Phnom Penh that have a more local touch, Bay Area Tacos gives off a more authentic and Western-friendly vibe.

"Bay Area Tacos’ Menu Highlights"

  • Taco Plate ($6.00) - Two tacos with a choice of beef, pork, or chicken
  • Bay Burrito ($6.50) - Mexican rice, cheese, onion, and cilantro wrapped in a burrito
  • Burrito Supreme ($9.00) - A burrito with refried beans, cheese, lettuce, sour cream, onion, and cilantro
  • All Meat Burrito ($10.00 / $12.00) - A meat and cheese-only burrito
  • Nachos ($4.50) - Toasted tortilla chips topped with cheese, jalapeños, and pico
  • Chips & Salsa ($2.50) - Classic tortilla chips with salsa
  • Quesadilla ($5.50) - A large tortilla filled with cheese and pico, with an option to add beans or meat

For my meal, I decided to try the Taco Plate, Nachos, and Quesadilla.

"How Was the Food?"

"Taco Plate"
The tacos had a perfectly crispy tortilla topped with juicy meat and fresh cilantro. The pork taco stood out the most, with a well-balanced texture – crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.

"Nachos"
Crunchy and flavorful, the nachos were topped with melted cheese, jalapeños, and a side of salsa. The salsa was slightly tangy and spicy, making it a great complement to the chips.

"Quesadilla"
The quesadilla was rich and cheesy, with a soft tortilla and a slightly crisped outer layer. Dipping it into the spicy salsa added another layer of flavor, making it an absolute delight.
